Preparing your CV

Hospitals & GP clinics like to see detailed CVs from candidates. Your CV should include all of your work history from the date you received your medical diploma to your current post.

You should give dates and details of your medical diploma and any specialist degrees / diplomas that you’ve got.  Please also give details of which medical registration boards you are registered with and whether it is full or full & specialist registration. You should also give details of any memberships or fellowships of Royal Colleges (or equivalent)

In addition, your CV should have a full description of the clinical work you’ve undertaken in the last two years. If you’re a hospital-based doctor, this information should include:

A brief description of the hospital / clinic facility you work in (location, size in terms of number of beds, whether acute or elective surgery or rehab, whether major hospital or district, specialties covered)
Size of the department you work in, sub-specialties within the department
Types of patients you treat and their main symptoms
Typical example of the numbers of patients you see each day and whether this is in an out-patient or in-patient ward
Types of treatment / surgery / procedures you are familiar with and the approximate numbers of each in the recent past (last 12 months)
The responsibility level (e.g. what types and numbers of procedures you have dealt with unsupervised, who you report to or refer complex cases to, whether you supervise or teach more junior doctors)
Any specialist areas of work or special interests

If you’re a GP, your CV should include:

A brief description of GP practice you work in (location, size in terms of number GPs / number of consulting rooms,
Types of patients you treat and their main symptoms
Typical example of the numbers of patients you see each day and how many hours this over
Types of treatment / minor surgery / other procedures you are familiar with and the approximate numbers of each in the recent past (last 12 months)
The CPD (continuing professional development) you typically undertake in a year – both formal courses and informal meetings / discussions / specialist reading etc
