Visas and Work Permits

You’ll need a visa to work in Australia. Usually this is a 457 visa which is classed as a temporary business visa for skilled employees. This will last you for four years, after which you can apply for another one, or if you choose, you can apply for residency. The 457 visa covers your family members as well. The visa process is quite complex. Your employer will sponsor you and then you complete your side of the forms once you have been nominated. You can usually apply for Permanent Residency (PR) once you’ve arrived in Australia.

Please note that the Visa / Work Permit regime is likely to change during 2018. We believe that GPs will continue to be on the long term shortage list and so the visa / PR  system will remain broadly as outlined above. However, it is possible that GPs will be moved to the short term shortage list, in which case you will still be able to work in Australia but it may be time limited
